North Tawton Firsts 12

IN this exciting friendly Crediton started in grand style with their heavier and superior forwards putting the North Tawton pack under pressure.

The first score came with the Crediton pack driving and mauling up the field to go over for a good try.

North Tawton were put under pressure from the kick-off but from their own 22 outside half Michael Denis broke clear to feed centre Tony Ash. He passed to Jamie Hoggins, who ran the rest of the way to beat the Crediton defence and cross over for an unconverted try to leave the score at half-time at 5-5.

After the interval North Tawton dominated the first 20 minutes but again Crediton's forwards broke out of defence with some good mauling and handling to plunge over for another try for the pack, which was unconverted.

North Tawton hit back immediately when a penalty saw a well rehearsed move put wing forward Martin Horn over for a try which David Grimes converted.

But a Crediton penalty in the dying minutes saw them snatch victory in a game which saw North Tawton take their chances well against a strong side.

THIS game was evenly fought for the first quarter with both teams playing end-to-end stuff.

Then from a forward breakdown Crediton had an old fashioned foot rush with Tim Garner getting the final touchdown, beating the surprised North Tawton defence.

The game continued with both sides having chances, but it was a Crediton penalty that saw them stretch the lead to 8-0 at half-time.

After the interval North Tawton came back well and were rewarded with two penalties which captain Joe Fewings at outside half duly slotted over to put them back into contention.

But with North Tawton tiring, Crediton's stronger line up began to outpace the home side.

Crediton's Phillip Neville burst through the lineout and took advantage of poor defence to score and put his side in the lead.

North Tawton showed some great spells of play — a good mixture of old heads and new will learn from the game and go on to better things.

l North Tawton are away to Topsham in the league on Saturday while the seconds entertain Topsham seconds at home, kick-off 2.30pm.
