EXPLORER Pen Hadow is supporting a call for young people to take part in an Antarctic expedition and follow in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton. Twelve budding explorers are being sought by the British Schools Exploring Society (BSES) to take part in their first expedition from November to January. They need to be between the ages of 18 and 23. Patron of the BSES Pen Hadow, who lives at Hexworthy on Dartmoor, said the challenge offered 'unrivalled personal development opportunities' for young people. Pen was the first to walk unsupported to the North Pole and is the only Briton to have walked without resupply to both North and South Poles. Volunteers will travel on HMS Endurance and explore South Georgia, camp out on the ice, trek up the glaciers, conduct vital scientific field work and even climb some of the peaks Shackleton ascended. The young people need to have some mountaineering experience, love being outside and working with people and have a thirst for science. The journey will focus on climate change and conservation. The cost of the expedition is £4,000 and the flight fare £2,000 but BSES Expeditions will offer funding support. To find out more call 020 7591 3141.
