SENIOR Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Miller told a meeting in Bere Alston recently that supermarkets should do far more to promote local produce.

Lady Miller, who is the party?s spokesperson in the House of Lords on rural affairs, said she was encouraged by the spread of farmers? markets, which provided an excellent way for farmers to cut out the middleman and sell direct to the public.

She said Waitrose was making a real effort to buy locally, but there was far more that the other supermarkets could do.

Lady Miller also spoke at the meeting ? which was chaired by county councillor Gretta Madigan ? in support of the party?s campaign to scrap council tax and replace it with local income tax.

Also on the platform was the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Torridge and West Devon David Walter.
