AROUND 20 people held a vigil for peace outside St James Chapel in Okehampton last Thursday, the day war finally broke out against Iraq.

The vigil was arranged on an informal basis by the Okehampton Peace Coalition group and lasted for around two hours on Thursday lunchtime.

Charles Pultenay, a member of the group, said around 20 people joined the vigil ? passing motorists also hooted their support for the vigil, he said.

?The main reason for holding it was to demonstrate that people still feel very strongly about this,? he said.

Team rector of the Okehampton and North Moor team, the Rev Stephen Cook, this week issued a reminder to residents in the area that a book has been placed in St James Chapel, in which people can write their names and prayers for the duration of the war. Prayers will be said for anyone leaving their names in the book. The chapel is open every day for people to sit quietly and pray or reflect on the situation in the Gulf.

And Mr Cook urged the families of servicemen and women serving in and around Iraq to contact the rectory on 01837 659297 if they were in need of prayers or support during the coming difficult weeks.

Pastor David Walters of the New Life Church in Okehampton said the situation in Iraq would be at the forefront of people?s prayers during the coming weeks.
