WEST Devon volunteers, who have helped more than 800 people get more active and find friendship through walking, were recognised for their achievement at a special celebration recently. The volunteers played a crucial role as walk leaders for Walk and Talk schemes, co-ordinated by West Devon Borough Council, as part of the national Walking for Health programme. The 56 West Devon volunteers were invited to attend a guided walk followed by a cream tea at the National Trust's Saltram Estate on Tuesday. Kate Wright, the borough council's Walk and Talk co-ordinator, said: 'This event was a great chance for everybody to get together to celebrate the success of Walk and Talk. None of the walks could take place without the volunteers giving up their time to regularly lead them. They deserve our thanks and what better way to celebrate than with a walk.' Active Devon is due to be taking over the contract to maintain, sustain and develop Walking for Health in Devon for at least the next two years from August 1. There are currently three Walk and Talk schemes in West Devon at Tavistock, Okehampton — including Broadwoodkelly and North Tawton — and Horrabridge. Mayor of West Devon Cllr Christine Marsh joined the volunteers at Saltram. She said: 'I know how much these walks are valued and what a difference they can make to people's lives. They are a great way to get out and about and do some gentle exercise but also provide a social experience. The walk leaders are a credit to West Devon and we appreciate the time they give to helping others.'
