YELVERTON Tennis Club held their annual inter-club tournament during a gap in the Plymouth and District League fixtures.

The tournament was held during Wimbledon fortnight and the entry was not as high as usual. However, some closely fought matches were provided during the two weeks.

Star of the tournament was Paul Every, who won three events. In the final of the men's singles he defeated Phil Gasche 7-6, 6-2 in an entertaining match.

Then, partnered by Dennis Jones, they outplayed Ken Darby and Martin Reed to win 6-1, 6-0.

In the mixed doubles Paul played with Jenny Kay and in the final they faced Wendy Sharland and Peter Smith. Paul and Jenny won by 6-3, 6-2 in an enjoyable match.

In the ladies' singles there were only three entries and in the finals Fiona Spreadbury beat Wendy Sharland 6-2, 7-5 in a hard fought, long match.

The ladies' doubles final was a fiercely fought match and lasted two hours. Fiona Spreadbury and Wendy Sharland defeated Shirley Every and Joy Tynan 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, but the result could have gone either way.

Last week's league matches were as follows: men's A team in division 2 won 8-0 against Saltash. Phil Gasche, Roger Froud, Jamie and Paul Every played in wet weather to achieve this excellent result.

The B team in division 5 won 5-4 against St Budeaux. Terry Leonard and John Marshall and Peter Smith and Simon Murray did well to win.

In the C team in division 6, Denis Jones and Martin Reed and Chris Spreadbury and Sam Sharland won 6-3 against Hill Lane B.

The ladies' A team v Mannamead B was postponed because of rain.

The B team in division 3 played away against promotion contenders Ivybridge D. Ann Short and Wendy Sharland picked up two points in a hard fought match. Jenny Kay and Sandra O'Sullivan played some fine tennis but were unable to pick up any more points. Result, lost 2-6.

The C team in division 4 played at home to division leaders Tavistock B. Janet Strelling and Lyn Jones lost both their matches as did Margaret Huzzey and Sue Portchmouth, playing for their first match this season. Although the match was keenly contested the results was a 0-8 defeat.
