THE second meeting of the Westward League cross-country series was held on Sunday at St Austell and despite continuing injuries Tavistock Athletic Club fielded a good turnout with 12 athletes taking part.

In the under 15 girls? race Emma Passmore made a welcome return to the cross-country scene. In a strong field with many of the girls a year older, she ran well, particularly in the latter stages, pulling back two places. With 200 metres to go Emma was caught by a Plymouth AC runner but in an impressive sprint for the line she overtook the Plymouth girl to finish in a good 12th place.

In the under 15 boys? race Alex Richards showed a dramatically improved form running strongly and finishing in an excellent fourth place. Also running for Tavistock was Seb Lee who was making his debut appearance in the league. He had a good run and finished in 12th place.

In the senior men?s event Tavistock had an excellent turnout of six runners. The first Tavistock runner home was again Martin Exley in 33rd place. He was followed by Robin Musgrave in 58th with Peter Bazley finishing in 95th. Just behind Peter was John Outhwaite, who was also running in the Westward League for the first time, finishing in 99th place, followed by Chris Eastaugh, another newcomer to the league in 102nd place. Roger Hewitt was the final member of the Tavistock contingent to finish, coming home in 108th place.

In the final race, Tavistock fielded three under 17 junior men athletes. This was a strong field and the race was closely fought behind the lead runner.

Luke Dumper was making his first appearance wearing a Tavistock vest and battled in strong winds to stay with the leading group. He crossed the line in an excellent fifth place followed by Adam Tofield in tenth place and Adam Holland in 12th, all three earning valuable points for the team competition as well as for their individual placings in the league.
