THE Okehampton branch of the Liberal Democrats have reported a series of successful fundraisers for the start of 2008, with more to come in the coming months. The first three months of the year saw the Lib Dems hold three monthly whist drives and a coffee morning to raise close to £400. The branch expressed thanks to all those who helped in any way to make these events successful. The branch have further commented that they are 'delighted' and 'proud' that Baroness Jane Bonham- Carter has agreed to become president for the Liberal Democrats in the new constituency of Central Devon. She is the daughter of Mark Bonham-Carter, who was the Liberal MP for Torrington and the great- granddaughter of H H Asquith, a former Prime Minister. She is also the cousin of Helena Bonham-Carter, the talented actress who recently starred in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd.
