AS of today (Thursday), Simmons Park car park will be 'free after three' for one month.
Town councillors discussed the issue of offering shoppers free parking at a policy and resources meeting on Monday night.
Following a unanimous vote by councillors to support the move, car parking charges will be waived after 3pm in the car park every day from December 1 to January 1 in an effort to increase footfall in the town centre and support local business, in particular the smaller traders, during the festive period.
Cllr Christine Marsh said: 'As a council, we want to do this to support the town traders, and in particular the small business, during what is traditionally their busiest time of year.
'Okehampton has had a hard year, and if a gesture such as this helps in any way, it is worthwhile.'
Okehampton mayor Maureen McDonald agreed: 'I fully support the measure for free parking after three at Simmons Park.
'We all hope that it can encourage shoppers into the town centre for their Christmas shopping, and support the smaller traders in town.'
Okehampton Town Council would like to hear from shoppers and traders to hear their opinions on the matter, and whether a more permanent measure could help stimulate business in the town centre.
