THE restoration of Okehampton's Simmons Park took a step further this week as recruitment of a new park keeper got under way.

The park, opened in 1907 courtesy of benefactor Sydney Simmons, is to be restored to its former glory thanks to a £311,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded in November last year.

Now the town council is looking to employ a park keeper, who will be responsible for the management, maintenance, upkeep and administration of the park.

Applicants will need to have a horticultural NVQ level three qualification or equivalent, plus experience in staff supervision, asset management and able to work to tight deadlines.

The project to restore the park will focus on the many heritage features which have been neglected over the years due to financial constraints.

Railings and iron furniture will be repaired, plus paths, entrances and boundaries.

More planting will take place with particular attention paid to woodland and riverside walks, rockery and water gardens.

Anyone interested in taking on the role of park keeper should contact the Okehampton town clerk on 01837 53179 for an information pack.
