OFFICERS of Dartmoor National Park are recommending that a site meeting be held at a former hotel in Chagford which a housing company wants to demolish and replace with ten homes.
Gerald Wood Homes have applied for planning permission to demolish the former Great Tree Hotel which lies in extensive grounds to the north of Chagford with access directly off the A382 Moretonhampstead to Whiddon Down road.
The proposal is to replace the timber-framed property with a single building on its footprint, sub-divided to provide nine separate dwellings and garage block and an integrated three-bedroomed unit replacing another building.
The remaining parking will be set around a courtyard adjacent to the main building.
Four letters of objection have been received by DNP raising concerns about about the use of a dangerous access, that the development would be outside a recognised settlement, a lack of local facilities and loss of hotel accommodation.
The county environment director has also objected to the proposal on the grounds that it would constitute a non-sustainable development and increase the use of an access with insufficient visibility.
The application will be considered by members of Dartmoor National Park tomorrow (Friday).
