CALSTOCK Parish Council is set to give financial help to the crisis-hit Oasis Centre in Gunnislake to help it attract other funding to keep it afloat. The centre, which helps the unemployed gain training, advice and support, could be closed down by May if it fails to secure the £20,000 it needs for its core services. Councillors were told last week that support at grassroots level, ie, the parish council, could have a knock-on effect at district and county level. A failed lottery bid and squeezes on other funding sources have sparked a serious financial crisis for the centre which has been running successfully for the last three and a half years on a shoestring budget. Cllr Mike Greenwood said the council should support it: 'If we cannot support this then I do not see how we can support anything else. 'It does good work for the people of the parish, helps them to get jobs and in the great scheme of things £20,000 is not a lot of money for something like this.' But there was some concern whether this would be a one-off grant or an ongoing commitment. The budget was already set for next year so any money would have to come from reserves, the council was told. Cllr Jane Moore said this was a very worthwhile organisation but the council was not in a position to fund it fully. She said: 'If any money that we can provide can tide them over until they have funding from elsewhere then I think we should help them out.' It was agreed to put the item on the agenda of the finance and general purposes meeting for March 7.
