A PARENT forum at Tavistock College next week will once again focus on drugs education and social media.
A pro-active parent forum on the same topic was held at the college last month and saw around 100 parents fill the main hall for advice on how to tackle drugs and identify where the substances could be coming from.
The meeting was hosted by the college following the death of a pupil at the school who died from an adverse reaction to MDMA in June this year. The meetings have been organised by parent Victoria Piper who is working closely with Tavistock police officers.
Parents are invited to the meeting, which is being held on Wednesday, October 17 at 6pm in the main hall, and will include a focused input from Devon and Cornwall Police on how parents and the school can work together as a local community to protect youngsters from the dangers of illegal drugs.
Tavistock College principal Sarah Jones said: ‘We had positive feedback from the first session but parents felt it was heavily focussed on the dark web and wanted more information on drugs specifically and on how to spot the signs of drug use on their children.
‘We don’t deal with individual children but it’s an education forum for parents to learn more about the impact of drugs.
’We do drugs education in school but we need to know that it is understood at home. It’s making sure that everyone is informed.’To help educate people further, fortnightly drop-in sessions have been organised by Tavistock police PCSO Kevin Williams.Next Thursday (October 18) will be the next session. Each meeting is held at The Queen’s Head (J D Wetherspoon) in Tavistock from 9.30am to 11am.Anyone concerned about children with issues ranging from drugs, sexual exploitation, alcohol, online usage, or anything else that concerns their children can go and speak with PCSO Williams.
