THERE?S a chance to have a go at painting the legend of the nine maidens of Belstone next month. As part of the Museum of Dartmoor Life?s exhibition ?Dartmoor Myths and Legends? local artist Celia Olsson will be taking a small group onto the moor to paint and sketch. Participants will have the opportunity to discover shapes and images in the rocks at Belstone Tor then have a go at painting their own version of the legend of the nine maidens stone circle, according to which nine young girls were caught dancing on the Sabbath and for this misdemeanour were turned to stone. It is said that even now in their petrified state they cannot stop dancing, but come alive at night and dance again ? stopping only as the moon sets. The half-day workshop is for both beginners and those wanting to experiment or try something new. The emphasis will be on having a go and capturing your response to the area without worrying about the ?correct formula?. Participants will meet at Belstone car park at 9.30am on Monday August 13. The event will cost just £5, to include the use of materials. For further details and booking please contact the Museum of Dartmoor Life on 01837 52295, or Celia Olsson on 01837 82796.
