THE Oxfam charity in Tavistock is expanding. The charity, which has a shop in Market Street, is to open additional premises in North Street. The new shop will offer books and music with everything from classic literature to jazz or folk. Jacky Theobald, manager of both Tavistock and Okehampton branches, said: ?It?s the first brand new shop to open in the South West for at least eight years. ?It is a real accolade to have Oxfam choose Tavistock and it must be something about Tavistock. There will be comfy chairs and a Fairtrade coffee machine?. Oxfam is the second largest, second-hand book dealer in Europe, and with people constantly buying and selling books, the new Tavistock shop should be very popular. Jacky said: ?People can help overcome poverty and suffering and the way they can overcome it is through support and volunteers. ?We need someone with an interest in books or music, or someone who just wants to help. ?We need the community to give their time. We?re so successful we need loads of help. ?It takes a minimum of 24 volunteers to run a shop and they will be coached and learn skills which they didn?t know they had and expand social horizons?. The new shop will be opening this month, with Oxfam already accepting book and music donations. For more information about the shop, or becoming a volunteer, contact Jacky Theobald on 01822 613901. The existing Oxfam shop will continue.
