Western Counties West
St Ives 7
Okehampton 20
OKEHAMPTON won a league match in Cornwall for the first time in many a year. But the scoreline did not reflect their dominance as determined defence by St Ives kept it respectable.
St Ives, without a win, tackled well and ran the ball at every opportunity trying to break their duck, but could not master the Okes' front five.
It was only the intervention in the second half by the referee to have uncontested scrums that prevented a landslide.
The home side scored first with a well worked try and conversion, then Okes replied from the kick-off with a combined effort of forwards and backs which young Alford finished.
A similar pattern of play saw Greg Vick cruise over. Both tries were converted by Searle.
The second period was damage limitation by St Ives and all that Okes scored were two penalties by Searle, the second from 62 metres.
Veterans White and Ewen came on and all the players can be pleased with their efforts, Any away win is a big effort and this young side will learn from the experience.
This Saturday sees the re-arranged league match at Crediton, who are going well. A typical derby match is expected.
