A VARIETY of social events are being planned in coming months by 'Out in Tavi' —a newly-formed group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans gender (LGBT) people in Tavistock and the surrounding area.

The group aims to provide a safe place for LGBT people to meet, support each other and have fun, and also provide a focus for raising awareness and sharing information with the wider community.

Events and activities are suggested and organised by those who attend the group.

A spokesperson for Out in Tavi said: 'Many LGBT people, especially in rural areas, are isolated and often encounter prejudice form family, friends, professionals and people at work.

'We hope to break this isolation and make a difference in people's lives, as well as being a place to make friends and build a sense of community.'

Out in Tavi is currently running a monthly support group, where LGBT people of all ages and backgrounds can share their experiences and feelings in a confidential, facilitated space.

The spokesperson said: 'We also have planned social meetings in a pub, and a walk followed by lunch — all LGBT people and their ideas are welcome — come along and see for yourself!'

The support group will meet on Tuesday, May 15 and Tuesday, June 19 between 7.30pm and 8.30pm at the Friend's Meeting House, near the Wharf in Tavistock.

On Saturday, June 2 there will be a walk between Pew Tor and Merrivale.

Anyone who would like to go should meet at Pixon Lane free car park at 11am to car share, or meet at the Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale for lunch at 1pm.
