MR G F Williams' letter (May 10) stated the EU flag should not be flown without planning permission because it is a Union flag and not a national flag.

So it must follow that planning permission must be obtained to fly the British Union flag under the same circumstances. Because although the British Union is a political union like the EU it is no more a nation than Scandinavia is.

Our nationality is English and our national flag is the St George's Cross.

If you are born in Devon then you are English and European regardless of your DNA or nationality of your parents and should be able to fly the St George's Cross.

White, black and brown have all represented England internationally. The Saxon that came here were Germans, only their children became English.

Since Scottish and Welsh devolution, people are starting to claim our identity back from the UK. Film of the 1966 World Cup final shows everyone using the Union flag; now the St George's Cross is most common.
