THE long locks of a Tavistock boy were chopped off recently to raise money for charity.

Oscar Gascoigne, who attends St Peter’s Junior School, has been growing his hair for two years but earlier this month decided he wanted to cut his hair for the Little Princess Trust, which help make wigs for children with cancer.

Oscar’s mum Jodie said that she was so proud of her son and what he has done to help other children: ‘My son Oscar Gascoigne has been growing his hair for two years — he suffered with anxiety and low self esteem and his way to express himself was by growing his hair. He really found a lot of confidence and self worth by being able to express himself.

‘He decided that he wanted to cut his hair for charity but like most children was keen to do it “now”!

‘For me as a parent I am extremely proud of the journey he has been on the confidence he has gained and the kind heart he has.

‘Despite being called “a girl” for two years he stayed positive and loved being a little different.

‘Mental health in children is very important to me as a parent. So many children have to fit into “a box” and sometimes that box isn’t quite right for that child — subsequently the child feels lost. I’m so happy that my son has learnt how to accept himself.’
