WITH half of the year now complete, the Okehampton United Charity is pleased to announce the continuation of its vital work in the town.
The charity, which exists solely to benefit residents in Okehampton and Okehampton Hamlets, has already agreed several grants for 2008, totalling to more than £143,000. Beneficiaries have so far included Okehampton Rugby Club, the Ockment Centre, Simmons Home Charity and the Battle of the Bands.
Several community support groups, including the Citizens' Advice Bureau, the Puzzle Tree drop-in centre and Okehampton Community Transport Group have also benefited from the charity's support.
The educational branch of the charity has also made grants to specific individuals as well as the Okehampton Scouts to allow them to complete their new hut and Okehampton Primary School for curriculum enrichment activities. OCRA and Room 13 have also been supported by the educational charity.
The accounts for Okehampton United Charity have recently been published and show grants of £93,550 in 2007. Its associated charity, the Okehampton Educational Foundation, made further awards of £141,658.
