BERE Ferrers will be getting fruity on January 11 when a pruning workshop is held for apple growers.
The Tamar Valley Service in conjunction with several keen apple growers from the Bere Peninsular is organising an orchard pruning workshop at two different orchards in Bere Ferrers.
Anyone who has an orchard with trees that require pruning is welcome to attend the day which will begin at 9.30am and will be led by orchard expert Charles Staniland.
Apart from the richness of their wildlife, traditional orchards can make an economically valuable contribution to the locally distinctive character and quality of Devon and Cornwall?s landscape. At one time every farm and large garden would have had its own orchard of mixed fruit trees for domestic and other uses, including folklore and festivals.
After an initial introductory talk, people will be able to visit the first orchard and get hands on experience of pruning and maybe some limb removal from both old and young trees. Mr Staniland will discuss the merits of different tools and instruct on pruning techniques.
Practising techniques and learning why orchards are such valuable habitats will from part of the morning and afternoon sessions.
The cost of the workshop is £10 and people are being asked to bring secateurs, a small bow saw, pruning saw and long handled loppers, suitable clothing and work gloves. For more information or to book a place contact 01822 610676.
