IT was a busy weekend at Roadford Lake recently with open-air opera and a leisure day at the reservoir.

An evening performance of Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' took place on an open air stage overlooking the lake, on Saturday, July 6. The Garden Opera Company's manager Louise Hynd said: 'Roadford Lake offers a spectacular setting and we were thrilled to be there again.'

The enthusiastic audience were treated to a knockabout comedy from a young cast who will be on tour around the country until September.

The evening was held to raise funds for the new Broadwoodwidger community hall, and is set to become an annual event.

'Go Boating' was the theme of the leisure day held the next day. More than 1,500 people enjoyed a range of activities — sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and pleasure trips in boats with volunteers from the Roadford Sailing Club.

Those feeling more energetic were able to try a mobile climbing wall, while clowns and face painters entertained younger children.

Fishing club members held fly casting lessons and rangers gave demonstrations of their work in the countryside.

Plans of the new community hall for Roadford were on display.
