MEMBERS attending Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club's pre-season meeting on Tuesday April 18 will get their first opportunity to see the newly refurbished kitchen. The redecoration and maintenance work was carried out by members during the closed season.

Closed season work on the green includes that of raising the edges back to being level. Players will now have to look for another excuse for 'ditching' their bowls!

In an effort to attract new members, the club will hold two open days on Sundays, April 14 and 21, when the public can come along and try their hand at the game with the held of club members who will be there to assist them.

New members will be allowed a two-month probationary period, during which they can claim back their membership fees (less the £5 joining fee) if they choose not to take up the sport, and existing members can introduce friends to the game for two sessions before they are required to join the club.

Anyone interested in joining can come along to the players' meeting, attend one of the open days or ring secretary Geoff Cork 832488 or club captain Mike Allen 612356 for further information.

Club members face a heavy season, with some 80 men's and mixed matches, 30 ladies matches plus both club and county competitions.

The club will again run an open tournament on June 11, when teams from all over the area will compete for more than £300 in prize money and trophy presentation evening at a local venue.

The club charity for the year will be the Marie Curie Fund with monies raised being presented at the annual meeting in October.

Members can look forward to reading about their efforts in the Times, as it is the secretary's intention to forward a report of each week's activities to the newspaper for publication.
