I HAVE been approached, through the Devon Family History Society, by Anthea White of Tasmania. She is seeking information on her great great grandfather William White who was born in Tolland, Somerset, 1809 and initially moved to Tavistock with his wife, Ann, and their first three children, Elizabeth, William and Kate, in the early 1840s.
Three children, Richard, Lucy and William Harold were born in Tavistock. The family moved away for a few years, returning in the 1850s.
They had another child, James Noel, born 1847 in Taunton, who attended the Tavistock British School, later becoming a tailor then emigrating to Tasmania.
By the time of the 1881 census they were living at 3 Bedford Place, Plymouth Road. It was here that they employed a servant, Ellen White age 20 (probably no relation to William), the daughter of Francis and Rachel White. William senior was a tailor by trade, and his son William Harold was an ironmonger?s apprentice. In the 1861 census his sister Elizabeth was annotated as being employed at the post office. Kate married Henry Pollington Hearder of Plymouth in 1870.
Anthea would be interested to have any information on the above family, particularly Elizabeth, who could have married in 1868. Initial contact should be through Sheila Smith on telephone number 01822 840925.
Sheila would also like to have any information known about Francis and Rachel White who were her great great grandparents. They had several children. Emma Jane White married Samuel Whittaker,. Ellen White married Edward Ham, Jessie White, Thomas Treganza and Alice White, Sidney Herbert Newcombe. There were also two sons, Francis born in 1859 and Henry William born about 1864.
