A WEST Devon dog owner has been issued with a £50 on-the-spot fine after allowing his pet to foul a pavement in Bere Alston.

It is the third fixed penalty ticket to be issued by West Devon Borough Council's dog warden since April.

The council is keen to crack down on dog fouling in the borough and currently works alongside 12 parishes to persuade dog owners to clean up after their pets.

Penalty tickets are issued under the Dogs Fouling of Land Act 1996 where the offence is not to immediately remove and dispose properly of your dogs faeces in a public area. The latest ticket was issued two weeks ago.

Dave Arscott, of West Devon Council's environmental health department, said: 'Allowing your dog to foul a public area without cleaning up after it is totally unacceptable and creates a real health hazard.

'Dog owners should be aware that they must take responsibility for their pets or they will get fined.'
