CHAGFORD will be carrying out the seven yearly ?Beating of the bounds? on Sunday, September 2. Parishoners will walk the moorland boundary from Jurston Green to Chagford Bridge, starting at 10am with a blessing by the Rector, Preb Anthony Geering. Terry Bleakman, Chagford Parish Council chairman, said: ?We are glad to observe this ancient ceremony to remind parishoners of the extensive boundaries of our parish. ?We hope to meet representatives of our neighbouring parishes en route to make sure there has been no encroachment since the last beating of the bounds. ?The boundary crosses Fernworthy Reservoir and we have arranged a boat to take some of the party along the exact line of the boundary. The rest of the party will walk around the reservoir to rejoin the boundary. ?We shall be bumping some of the younger parishoners on the various boundary stones so that, as it says in an old law book, ?the bounds may be more particularly impressed upon their memories?.? On returning to Chagford, parishoners are invited to supper at the Jubilee Hall at 6.30pm. Tickets for the supper are available from Pam Stone, parish clerk, on 01647 432999.
