VOLUNTEERS from Tesco's Callington store who entered last week's charity Race For Life are well on their way to reaching their target of £1,000.
Dressed in pink, the all-female team (pictured right) were escorted to the 5km fun run in Plymouth's Central Park by Callington town crier Dennis Cook, in a coach on loan from local bus company Jackett's Coaches.
'We are happy to be supporting the Tesco team for the second year," said managing director Trevellyan Jackett. 'We are delighted to be asked once again to be part of such a high profile community effort for such a good cause. With everyone working together, we can help find a cure for cancer.'
Race For Life is the UK's largest women-only fundraising event, where women come together to walk, jog or run 5km to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Tesco manager Saffron Ray said: 'Cancer Research UK is our charity of the year this year, but it is a cause that touches us all — I ran for my Auntie Eleanor who died of leukaemia. The money we raise will go towards Tesco's £10 million fundraising goal to support Cancer Research UK's research into the early diagnosis and detection of cancer.
'We would particularly like to thank Mr Jackett for driving us and Mr Cook and the many volunteers for their support.'
Scott Renken, Race for Life event manager for Plymouth, said: "Race for Life in Plymouth was a fantastic event and we are so very grateful to the Tesco Callington volunteers and to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make the event happen.'
