IT has been a good week for Yelverton Golf Club.
Laura Eastwood took part in English Close Amateur Championship, which was held recently at Aldeburgh Golf Club from May 20-24.
She produced a particularly good second round score giving a total of 155 and with 31 others qualified for the match play knock out rounds.
In the first match she beat E McBride from Upton-by-Cheshire by 3/2.
In the second round she lost to N Timmins from Sene Valley 4/3. It was a significant achievement for Laura to get to the last 16 players of this prestigious tournament.
On May 21 the St Austell Brewery organised a corporate day at St Enodoc Golf club for their customers in Devon and Cornwall.
Yelverton Club Captain, Paul Creaven, and his ?bar manager? partner, Keith Parris, won this four ball better ball competition with 40 points and were presented with some wine and a decanter each.
On the same day, the regional round of the John Deere International Competition was played at Royal North Devon Golf Club.
The team representing Yelverton was the club?s professional, Tim McSherry, the club?s secretary, Stewart Barnes, the head green keeper, Steve Evans and the Chairman of the Green?s Committee, Dave Gove.
The competition was a complicated scramble event, and the team won the competition with a score of 58 (14 under par).
They qualified to play in the national finals, which will be held on July 25 over the Brabazon course at the Belfrey.
On May 15 the ladies held their Bronze and Silver Open at Yelverton.
This was a stableford competition. The winner of the silver section was J Wright of Staddon Heights with 38 points, runner up was V Benbow of Dartmouth with 38 points and third was A. Sweeney of Yelverton with 37 points.
The winner of the bronze section was N Boath of St Mellion with 39 points, runner up was Mrs Caunter of Okehampton with 37 points and third was E Devetta of East Devon with 35 points.
An extra medal competition was due to be played at Yelverton on May 22.
However, the course was closed because of poor visibility and it has now been rearranged for May 29.
Kay Creaven won the ladies? spring eclectic competition with a net 63·5; runner up was Annette Sweeney with a net 66·75 and third was Georgie Evans, also with a net 66·75.
The ladies team played a Devon League match at home against the Manor House, Moretonhampstead on May 20 and won by 9 points to 4.
On May 18 Yelverton held its Open Mixed Foursome event, which is played over 31 holes. The winners with 63 points were C Malone and Mrs A Norman from Exeter, runners up were P Jordan and Miss J Norman, also from Exeter, with 57 points, and third were S Barnes and Mrs A Sweeney of Yelverton with 56 points. The latter also won the Pat Camp Cup.
The Dartmoor Foursomes, a two round event, took place at Yelverton on May 24 and at Tavistock on May 25.
The winners were George and Nikki Gawman from Tavistock with 78 points, runner ups were Alan and Kerry Gawman from Tavistock with 76 points, third were Richard Potts and Simon Gilder from Tavistock with 72 points, fourth were Lee Roberts of Sparkwell and Brian Gullick of Yelverton with 72 points and fifth were Karl and Laura Eastwood of Yelverton with 71 points.
