KELLY College's new astro-turf all-weather surface was opened by Olympic gold medallist Veryan Pappin last Sunday.
Veryan — a member of the Great Britain hockey squad that won the gold medal in the Seoul Olympics of 1988 — is an Old Kelleian and attended the college from 1974-76.
The day started with a ladies' hockey match between the college and Tavistock ladies' hockey club — the result being a draw.
In the afternoon a triangular men's hockey tournament between the college, Old Kelleians and the Devon Dumplings, resulted in an overall win for the Dumplings.
A reception in the Melvin Hall concluded the celebrations.
The Astroturf pitch has full floodlighting and meets county hockey standard specifications. Being all-weather, it will be used equally by both boys and girls at Kelly throughout all three terms.
It will provide a useful facility for football and will be used for tennis in the summer.
The Old Kelleian Club has donated a changing facility.
The pitch is available for use by the local community and is currently being used by Tavistock hockey club for their practices and matches.
Anyone interested in hiring the facility should contact Tim Wiggans on 01822 813130.
