Devon and Cornwall League Okehampton First XV 13 Newquay First XV 12 AFTER suffering a cruel one point defeat last week Oke were this week on the right end of a similar scoreline. Although perhaps the performance was not quite as good as last week, this was nonetheless an important victory over a side at the top of the league and on a long unbeaten run. Much to the home side?s surprise, Newquay decided to play with the elements in the first period in order to try and build a sizeable lead, just as they had done in their home victory last week. However it was Okehampton that started the match the brighter as they regularly entered opposition territory securing good set piece ball and generally keeping play tight. Oke were looking comfortable when a costly dropped pass in midfield allowed the Newquay centre to break clear. Full back Matt Dennis made the first of several excellent last ditch tackles to pull him down short of the line, but eventually the ball was recycled and the home defence ran out of numbers as the right winger crossed wide out. The conversion was missed and despite having most of the play Oke trailed 5-0. Oke failed to come away from several forays into Newquay?s 22 with any points and soon found themselves further behind. Another loose pass was intercepted and from a penalty award that soon followed the visitors elected to kick to the corner. Oke initially repelled the catch and drive from the lineout, but eventually the visitors crossed and also managed to add the conversion to stretch their lead to twelve points. Half time was approaching and Oke knew they needed to ensure the margin became no greater. They had the bonus of narrowing the gap before the break when Lee Carey kicked a well struck penalty to leave the interval score at 12-3. This was a deficit that Oke knew was surmountable. They dominated the next quarter, battering away at the visitors? line and looked odds on to score on several occasions. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to breach the Newquay rearguard they elected to kick for posts, and Lee Carey converted with aplomb to reduce the deficit to six points. The Newquay pack held firm and time was running out. Oke pounded the line in the bottom right corner. Knowing they needed a converted score to win, they took the visitors by surprise as they span the ball wide and man of the match Matt Dennis entered the line cutting a great angle to cross under the posts. Carey converted and the home side were ahead for the first time in the match with very little time remaining. The visitors were still on the offensive when the final whistle blew and the Okes had achieved another very hard earned, but well deserved league victory.
