OKEHAMPTON College been extremely busy in terms of the number of matches and inter-school competitions entered. Its cricketers have had their most successful season for many years ? playing 16 matches and winning 12. The U14s reached the Devon semi-final, where they lost to a very good West Buckland team, and the U15s fought their way to the Devon final before losing to Blundell?s. This term Okehampton College teams have beaten Kelly College at all age groups; West Buckland, Devonport High School for Boys, The Park School, Tavistock, Heles, Colyton Grammar and Shebbear. Its athletes once again acquitted themselves extremely well with excellent team and individual performances. In the English Schools Cup, the college?s year 9 and 10 girls won the area competition and went on to the South West final played at Millfield in Somerset. At the Devon Combined Events Championships, Okehampton College junior girls team of Sian Aslett, Harriett Bullingham, Rebecca Chapman and Cissy Moore, won to become county champions. In the process, Rebecca won the individual event by a margin of more than 500 points. At the Exeter and District Schools championships Okehampton year seven girls were second in their competition; year seven boys, second; year eight girls, first; year eight boys, second; year nine girls, first; year nine boys, sixth; year tengirls, first, year ten boys, first. The girls also won the relay competition. Staff members Mrs Colton and Mrs Chapman took the girls to the Devon Secondary Schools Athletics Association Competition for Girls, held at Kelly College. This is the first time Okehampton have entered for more than 20 years and the college was pleasantly surprised to win the year nine competition and come second by just one point in the year tens ? as a result the girls came away with the overall shield. In the team competitions, the college were helped by some remarkable individual performances from athletes who have gone on to be selected for representative honours. At the County Championships Becky Read came fourth in the discus; Michelle Lane was second in the discus; Harriett Bullingham ran a personal best in the 800m; Chris Knott came fifth in the discus; Jacob Ayris was second in javelin while Chris Humphreys won the shot. Rebecca Chapman won both the hurdles and 100m before she went on to win the hurdles and come second in the 100m at the South West championships. On top of this she has won the Devon and the South West Pentathlon Championships and goes on to the National Championships in September. Alex Macgregor continued to dominate multi-event athletics in Devon by winning the County Championships by a massive 1,500 points from his nearest rival. In the process he long jumped a massive seven metres and high jumped 1.80m. He then went on to come second in the South West Octathlon event and has qualified for the National Championships. Alongside the high-level competition, a good number of students have taken part in other sports and pursuits. Rounders teams have gained excellent results this term and year nine students have had fun learning to sail at Roadford. College staff congratulated all the athletes who had taken part in these and other sporting and recreational activities in what has to have been the wettest Summer term for many years.
