OKEHAMPTON Men?s A tennis team had another busy week in their drive for promotion, playing three games in nine days. The series started at Exmouth, one of the few clubs in the Exeter league that continues to play on grass. Okehampton had difficulty getting used to the variable bounce of the grass courts, and were 4-1 down at the end of the first rubbers. Dan Arnot and Paul Love narrowly lost to Exmouth?s first pairing (6-7, 6-4, 6-7), whilst Chris Seale and Mark Quinn, playing in his first game for the club, lost in straight sets. The reverse matches were played on Exmouth?s hard courts as players were increasingly slipping on the grass and the conditions were becoming dangerous. Dan and Paul defeated Exmouth?s second pairing in straight sets (6-1, 6-0), with Chris and Mark going down by a similar result. The match ended Exmouth 6, Okehampton 3. Okehampton returned to winning form with an 8-0 victory away to Woodbury. Adam Richards returned to partner Dan Arnot and the pairing won both their matches in easy fashion (6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1). Stuart Jarvis partnered Paul Love, and whilst the pairing struggled to put away their opening game (6-4, 7-5) they had a more straight- forward victory in the second rubber (6-4, 6-2). Okehampton completed the week with an away fixture against league leaders Bovey Tracey. Okehampton were 4-0 up after the first rubbers, with Dan Arnot and Stuart Jarvis winning their first game 6-3, 6-3 and Paul Love and Chris Searle similarly gaining victory in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). The second rubbers were more competitive. Dan and Stuart were taken to a tie break in their first set, but came through this (7-2) before running out easy winners in the second set (6-1). Paul and Chris lost their first set in tie break before winning the next two sets. The match ended Bovey Tracey 1, Okehampton 8. The team is now one point behind the league leaders with two games in hand, and should secure promotion in their final fixtures this week. l Next match: Bovey Tracey at Simmons Park tomorrow (Friday). Okehampton and District Tennis Club will be holding men?s and ladies? doubles competitions for club players on Sunday, September 9. Full details in next week?s report.
