Devon and Cornwall League Wellington 3 Okehampton 35 OKEHAMPTON produced one of their best performances of recent years to totally outplay a Wellington side that rarely loses at home in the league. Winning the toss and playing up the slope, Oke started at breakneck speed and took the home side by surprise with the pace and the power that their pack were exerting. It was all Okehampton and Lee Carey soon kicked two penalties to put the visitors into an early six-nil lead. Bossing the game up front and creating multiple overlaps outside, Oke could have been out of sight with a quarter of the game gone. However they failed to capitalise on early dominance in the possession and territory stakes, and a rare visit to the Oke half allowed Wellington to reduce the arrears with a straightforward penalty kick. This was an isolated breakout though and Oke were soon piling on the pressure in the scrummage, and from a five yard scrum, number eight Steve Alford went over for an unconverted score to leave it 11-3. Okehampton then found themselves defending deep in their own 22. The ball was turned over and a fantastic counter attack that started virtually under the posts involving good hands and support, ended with Gareth Espin crossing imperiously under the sticks for a try that rocked the home side. Oke were flying now, and almost immediately some delightful attacking play created an overlap for Matt Dennis who feigned inside and beat the full back on the outside for a classic winger?s try. Both scores were converted by Lee Carey and the half time score was an impressive 25-3. The home side were shell shocked. Winger Lee Carey added another penalty to stretch the lead and Oke spent long periods camped in the opposition half. Then, from another clean break through the middle, a long pass was fired out to Carey who stepped inside the last defender to cross by the posts for a try that he converted. The game was now won and Oke brought on all the subs from the bench for the last quarter. At the final whistle Oke celebrated a rare away victory at this ground. They had dominated the whole match almost from start to finish. It was a superb all round team performance and every single player had played their part. It was as if last week?s victory had unleashed the shackles and confidence had been restored to a side that had been badly lacking it earlier this season. The forwards were powerful, together as a unit and supplied plenty of good ball. The backs then used it to good effect to create a dynamic and vibrant team performance. l This week sees the first league clash with Crediton for many years.
