WALKHAM Valley were hosted by The Entertainers at he Wembury House cricket pitch. Walkham batted first and after the early departure of Alistair Peers for 4, enjoyed a run feast. Chris Spreadbury took toll of some loose bowling to amass 26 quick runs, including 5 boundaries, before retiring undefeated on 26. James Vincent departed quickly, but Rich Berry carried on Spreadbury?s good work with Tim Baxter holding the fort at the other end. Berry retired for 26 with 6 boundaries to his credit, but the runs continued to accrue as J Berry and Baxter pinched a few between the wickets until Berry was caught for 10. Tim Baxter and Ken Kay nibbled away steadily, but Baxter was run out for 11. Roger Smith kept Ken Kay company until Smith fell in the outfield for 7. Graham Vincent was not out 2 and Ken Kay carried his bat for 11 to leave Walkham 108 for 5. Entertainers got off to a steady start with good running but M Butcher was caught and bowled by Graham Vincent. Chris Spreadbury had Gill snapped up by Sandy Ralph. Jones and Westlake profiting from some loose fielding and sloppy bowling retired undefeated on 25. Sandy Ralph, Mike Kearney, and Rich Berry put the brakes on the scoring, Ralph snaring Clooke, caught by J Berry. What had seemed to be a formality for Entertainers at 90 for 3, and only needing a further 19 from the last five overs developed into a cat and mouse game as Rich Berry conceded only 3 from one of those overs and James Vincent 1. Roger Smith took two wickets in consecutive balls, one a smart catch behind the wicket by stand in Sandy Ralph, and Jones was run out by sharp fielding from James Vincent in the same over. At 98 for 6, Goard pinched a four and two singles in the penultimate over to leave the cliffhanging situation of four required from the last over. When James Vincent bowled two dot balls Entertainers needed a run a ball. Goard then saw them home with three balls to spare with a cut through point. Entertainers 109 for 6. Peers 0 for 9, R Berry 0 for 9, Mike Kearney 0 for 3, G Vincent 1 for 7, Spreadbury 1 for 7, Ralph 1 for 9, J Vincent 0 for 5 and Smith 2 for 11 between them had bowled 16 of the 20 overs for 60 runs. Poor bowling cost Walkham what had been a real thriller of a match! That?s entertainment!
