TAVISTOCK'S 'Feel Better with a Book' group has celebrated its first year of shared reading and good conversations, and with the boost of a grant can now train a local volunteer to keep the group going. The group is one of 12 'Reading Together in Devon' groups provided by Devon Libraries in partnership with the Reader Organisation. Tavistock Feel Better with a Book group is for anyone, readers or not, who would like to listen to great literature read aloud. This year the group read a surprising mix, including the Brontes, Wordsworth, Keats and Tennyson, plus lighter and more contemporary stories and poems. Member Sue said: 'I love the poems and the discussions. I have never looked forward to anything quite like this. 'I get to Tuesday and think "Ah good, it is the reading group tomorrow", and I want to read more now — so much better than TV.' It is a relaxed group with a lot of laughter, and interested people are encouraged to try it out during one of the sessions, held on Wednesdays from 2pm to 3.30pm. The group meets in Tavistock Library while it is closed to the general public. Anyone who loves books, working with people and knows how stories and poems can help people feel better, can take part in the Reader Organisation's three-day training programme to become one of Devon's shared reading facilitators.
