OUR group recently ran a stall in Bedford Square, campaigning against the proposed replacement for Trident nuclear submarines.

The replacement will cost many billions of pounds and violates the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which the UK signed in 1970.

A BRIX/'Mail on Sunday' poll in 2010 indicated that 63% of the British public wanted spending cuts to include the scrapping of Trident. This accords with the response to our stall from people in Tavistock.

A few years ago we ran a similar stall and found that there was most support for money to be spent on health and education, yet some little support for Trident.

But at our recent event not one person we asked thought the Trident replacement should go ahead.

However, Philip Hammond, Defence Secretary, seemed to say last week that the project would be carried out. This is despite the fact that the 'Main Gate' decision and discussion in Parliament is scheduled for 2016!

We believe this is an issue of serious concern and suggest that all who oppose Trident replacement should contact Philip Hammond and/or their MP.
