I WOULD like to reply to Christine Harbottle's assertion in letters, May 8, that research shows no negative impact on tourism from wind turbines. The reason for this is not because there are no negative impacts, but rather because there has been virtually no research done on the matter. This despite the fact that wind turbines have been around for over 20 years. One piece of research was the 2008 Moffat report for the Scottish government, which concluded that in fact there was a negative impact on tourism, albeit small. They recommended that great care should be taken in future to ensure that any possible adverse effects should be fully examined at the planning stage. A difficult task for councils if proper evidence is in such short supply! That report was six years ago, and since then the number of applications for wind turbines in Devon has increased hugely, as has the actual size of the turbines themselves. People are quite right to continue to fight the growing invasion of these turbines until it has been properly disproved that they do no harm to the local economy, and that any harm they may do is offset by a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions; a reduction which 20+ years of wind power has completely failed to bring about.
