MARY Tavy Bonfire Night, which was featured in the Times last week with a selection of photographs from the event, was a great success in every respect, even the weather was kind this year. Several hundred people from Mary Tavy and well beyond enjoyed the selection of activities which included games and competitions as well as the huge bonfire and magnificent fireworks display. A couple of people had expressed concerns in case any hedgehogs might have started to hibernate under the pile of wood — the organisers would like to assure everyone that no hedgehogs were harmed in the making of the bonfire. The pile of wood was moved and turned on the day to ensure no wildlife was underneath. Also, the fireworks were selected to be as quiet as fireworks can be and there were no rockets. Sparklers were only allowed in one area so that no wires were dropped in the grass which could have caused problems for dogs walking in the recreation ground. The organisers — the Mary Tavy Jubilee Group and the Trustees of the Recreation Ground — are delighted that the event is able to be free to everyone, thanks to sponsorship from The Pool Guy, SJP Motors and Terry's Zimmers, plus donations from businesses and individuals. Although most of the activities on the day are also free, the sale of food and other items resulted in a profit of around £400 which will go towards future projects in the Recreation Ground and around the village. The Jubilee Group is a local charity dedicated to community development, environmental improvement and heritage.
