A REQUEST to hold a car show on Bedford Square next month has been given the thumbs down by Tavistock Town Council.

Roger Young Landrovers had asked permission to hold the displays on the square on October 19 and 29.

Car shows have been held in the area as part of the Lions carnival week in the past, on the basis that proceeds from the carnival benefited local charities.

But at last week?s meeting of the town?s properties committee, councillors decided not to grant permission for a commercial car display.

Cllr Judith Williams said: ?The whole idea of the square was to make it a community thing ? I would not recommend this at all.?

Cllr Marjorie Corner pointed out that the square is being used for commercial purposes, for example, the farmers? market.

And Cllr Caroline Keane was concerned the policy over usage of Bedford Square was becoming ?blurred?.

Cllr Peter Donkin suggested a clear policy should be drawn up regarding use of Bedford Square. ?We must bring this back,? he said.
