THERE was a young talent spinning the decks last Saturday afternoon at Hatherleigh Community Centre when nine-year-old DJ Jessie Lou staged a disco for the community.

Jessie Lou – or Jessica Lewis as she’s known in everyday life – showed off her talents at her DJ Jessie Lou and the Disco Pigs, an early evening event for all ages.

She also performed a half hour slot at a charity fun day at Okehampton College earlier that day.

‘This is her launch disco to let people know that she is available for children’s parties,’ said mum Donna.

‘She just loves it, it has given her a huge confidence boost to get out there in front of a load of people and perform.

‘She did Hatherleigh Festival last year. She is only nine but she is incredibly keen.’

She said her daughter first became interested when she held discos at home for others of her six children.

‘I have got various children and I have always held discos at home and Jessica has always been really interested in helping the guy setting them up.

‘We bought her a small set of decks and she was practising a lot at home, then she was invited by Hatherleigh Festival to do a set and it has gone from there really. She has got a massive set of decks now, full size, all the kit.

‘She did a 40th birthday party recently and she had to ask me and her dad what what music old people like. She put together a song list and calls it her old people’s playlist!’
