WEST Devon residents are being given the chance to have their say on the future of the countryside by joining the newly established Local Access Forum.

Landowners, managers and those who use the area?s beautiful countryside for walking, cycling and horse riding, will be able to take part in examining and improving policies for access to rural areas.

The forum is being set up as part of legislation introduced under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, and is part of the statutory duty of Devon County Council.

It will cover the whole county, with the exception of Dartmoor and Exmoor, which will have their own forums.

A total of 12 forum members is being sought in addition to two county council representatives.

Nominations are invited from groups or individuals involved in land owning or farming, countryside users and representatives of tourism, business or other relevant interests.

Cllr Gretta Madigan, chairperson of the public rights of way committee, said: ?This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who cares about access to the countryside to have their voice heard.

?Many people out there, both living and working in rural areas, can make a valuable contribution to the debate and use their interests and experience to advise on developing additional opportunities for everyone to enjoy the countryside whilst respecting local circumstances and needs.

?The forum will include a balanced cross-section and membership is open to all sectors of the community.

?The advice of the forum will be sought on many access issues, including rights of way improvement plans and how countryside access can link with tourism, sport, transport and other recreations.?

Membership of the forum will be on a voluntary basis, but travel expenses and childcare costs will be met.

Anyone wishing to be considered for forum membership should contact the Public Rights of Way Service, Environment Directorate, Devon County Council, Topsham Road, Exeter EX2 4QW.

Alternatively, telephone 01392 382084 for an application form.
