AFTER a year troubleshooting in eating establishments around the country, former owner of the Horn of Plenty at Gulworthy and celebrity chef Peter Gorton is preparing to open his new restaurant in Tavistock, writes Alison Stephenson.

Peter is going back to his roots as head chef and will open Gorton's, formerly the Blue Mango in Plymouth Road, next month.

He told the Times this week that he had searched high and low for a new restaurant and nearly bought one in Plymouth: 'In the end I kept coming back to Tavistock because it is such a lovely place and it already has a reputation as a foodie town. I want to make it even more so and hope to work with other town restaurants, local food producers and businesses.'

Peter had been at the Horn of Plenty for 20 years, first as head chef and for the last 12 years as co-owner with Paul Roston. It was voted in the top 10% of restaurants in the UK.

He said one of the reasons he sold it was to spend more time with his wife and two children, aged 9 and 13, and over the past year had been thinking about the future whilst doing some consultancy work.

'This year has given me a chance to try a lot of different things, like working with students at Cardiff University and doing demonstrations and troubleshooting in restaurants all over the country,' he said. 'I enjoyed it but I had the urge to get back in my own kitchen instead of sorting out other people's problems.

'I am a chef and that is what I do well and I want to get back doing what I love.'

Peter, who featured on the TV programme 'Kill It, Cook It, Eat It', is planning to open his restaurant four days a week so he can continue with other projects, including charity work and writing and spend that all important time with his family.

Known for his charity work with the Children's Hospice South West — he raised £70,000 whilst at the Horn of Plenty — he will be working with the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust which provides education for children with severe physical disabilities as well as HeartSWell and cancer charities.

Peter is also in the process of writing a book about 14 of the best food producers in Devon.
