HOMELESSNESS among young people is on the increase in West Devon and new procedures have been brought in to ensure they are treated in a consistent manner.
West Devon Borough Council has produced a joint agency agreement to support young homeless people, ensuring they have equal access to services and receive the appropriate help they need.
The agreement has been forged between the borough council, Devon Social Services, West Devon Homes and Youthwize.
Borough housing service manager Marion Playle said that in 1999/2000 16 youngsters under the age of 25 were homeless in the borough. In the next year this increased to 27 and so far this year 30 have been registered homeless.
'Putting a roof over their heads is only part of the problem. We need to ensure they receive the necessary support to help them maintain their tenancies,' she said.
'Homelessness can be devastating, particularly for the young, and I am pleased that all agencies have signed up to the agreement.'
The new protocol will not only help the young homeless but will monitor outcomes and gather statistical data for future strategies.
