OKEHAMPTON played Teign Valley in a mixed doubles tennis friendly match on Sunday June 19. Players: 1st pair J Jarvis/E Cunnington, 2nd pair M Podd/C Searle. This was the first friendly match of the season with new players Chris Searle, Mandy Podd and John Jarvis playing in their debut games. Match one ? strong serving from Jarvis/Cunnington saw them through their first set 6-1 keeping momentum to stay ahead and take the second set 6-3. Searle/Podd played well but were unable to hold onto the first set which they lost 3-6. The second set followed the same format as the first which they also lost 3-6. Match two ? the score did not reflect the closeness of Jarvis/ Cunnington?s second match but with aggressive volleying and solid stroke play they came out on top to take the first set 6-1. This continued into the second set which they took 6-4. Searle/Podd opened well with a close fought first set but the opposition were dominant in the end, winning 5-7. Unfortunately they could not regain previous form which led to a 0-6 defeat in the second set. Results: JJ/EC won 6-1/6-3, won 6-1/6-4. CS/MP lost 3-6/3-6, lost 5-7/0-6. Overall draw 4-4. Overall a promising start to the friendly match season.
