DUE to several of last year?s players no longer available due to university commitments, injuries and retirement the Okehampton Ladies team this year is made up of several players new to the game.

Regretfully it is a small squad and this game was started with only 9 players although an extra player was drafted in after half an hour.

The inexperience of a lot of the players enabled the Totnes ladies to control most of the game.

While Totnes were able to make full use of their extra player and passed the ball around well there were not too many chances with the Oke back three of Vaughan, Frances Bartle and Claire Tyson defending stoutly in front of Ceri Chapman in goal who brought off a couple of fine saves.

At half time and against the slope Oke were unlucky to go in two down and were more hopeful for the second half playing down the hill but with Hayley Vincent their most experienced midfielder carrying an injury Okes were unable to keep possession of the ball for very long and persistent pressure and some tired legs saw them concede further goals to go 5-0 down before they responded with a well taken solo effort by Naomi Wilkins.

Michelle Vaughan again had an outstanding game and quite rightly was awarded the man of the match. All the new players without exception acquitted themselves well and can only learn from the experience and take heart from this performance.

Becky Walker especially had a noteworthy game and shows promise.

This week?s game is at home to Plymouth Argyle Reserves. Kick off is 3pm.

l The club feels there must be other ladies in Okehampton that would like to get involved ? maybe even some that have experience of playing competitive contact sports.

They would be welcome to come training on Thursday nights at the club house in Simmons Park between 6.30 and 7.30.
