A PIONEERING scheme to support school students in the community in Tavistock has just appointed a new organiser.

Tavistock Library has appointed Elaine Sylvester to run its study support centre, which is now in its second year of operation.

The centre is run on an informal, drop-in basis where school students can make free use of the library?s eleven computers, either for school work or their own use.

Elaine, a qualified teacher, said: ?It?s open to all schoolchildren, though if anything, we would like to encourage Year 6 students onwards, because that?s when homework gets more important.

?It?s like a drop-in centre, they come in and work individually, but I am there to help if they need it.

?It?s not technically a homework club, or an extension of school. They can come in and research anything.

?The resources are free for them to use, they can come in and get their printing done, go on the internet, we supply them with disks; they can come in on their own or with friends. ?

The study support centre was initiated by Devon County Council but receives additional support funding ? Tavistock Lions Club recently granted the centre £150 to cover printing and resource costs.

It is open after school between 3.15pm and 5.15pm on a Monday and Friday and between 9.30am and 1.30pm on Saturdays.

During half-term, the Monday and Friday sessions are between 10am and noon.

The centre is also running a competition to design the official Christmas card for Tavistock Library ? for which there will be a prize.
