A PROJECT costing more than £100,000 to dramatically improve sport facilities in a West Devon village has officially opened.

Lamerton now has a professional class Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at the community centre after years of fundraising.

It was opened by former chairman of the community centre Ian Minshull and local youngster Shane Stacey at a special ceremony for the community recently.

Since then the facility has been used every single day and been marked out for five-a-side football, basketball and a full size tennis court.

It will mean a multitude of sports can be played and sports clubs are being encouraged to start up to take full advantage of the games area.

Mr Minshull said it would not have been possible without the generous donations and grants of many people and organisations.

‘Thanks must go to the following for the grants received: Lamerton Parish Council, Devon County Council’s Investing in Devon Fund, Lamerton WI, The Tesco Bag Fund and Shona Dickinson who sponsored the tennis equipment in memory of her late partner Alan,’ he said.

‘The committee would like to thank everyone who supported us these last few years, including everyone who has helped us fundraise and our main donor.’

Current chair of trustees Penny Baker said ‘The MUGA is a great addition to the village and I hope it is used by villagers of all ages for years to come.’
