DESIGNS for the upgrade of Tavistock?s Guildhall Square toilets are nearing completion following joint detailed work between West Devon Borough and Tavistock Town Councils. A planning application for the new works is expected to be sent into West Devon planners later this summer. Architects Pearn and Procter of Roborough have drawn up plans based on the views of more than 200 people who took part in a series of consultation days held earlier this year The majority of those who commented on the plans opted for the upgraded toilets to have a pitched roof. Of the two plans on display, the direct access toilets were favoured over the toilet block with an internal lobby area, and the design reflects this. The new toilets will also include baby changing facilities, will be fully compliant with disabled access legislation and, as far as is possible, will use the existing façade of the building. West Devon Borough and Tavistock Town Councils have committed a total of £150,000 to upgrade the facilities which closed in the autumn. Temporary toilet facilities are nearby. Cllr Nick Morgan, vice-chairman of the borough?s environment committee, said: ?The borough and town councils have consulted widely on this scheme, consulting with the public as well as working with all interested external agencies to ensure the scheme provided is consistent with the current architecture of the area.? Tavistock mayor Anne Johnson said: ?The town Council are keen to see this project progress and provide good toilet facilities in the centre of Tavistock.?
