RESIDENTS in Callington and Kelly Bray will be flushed with the news that they may soon be able to ‘spend a penny’ in a popular park, depending on the agreement of councillors and a toilet trial.
The question of whether toilets could be installed at the Launceston Road recreation ground was brought up by a member of public at a meeting of Callington Town Council last week.
Councillors thought it was a good idea and agreed to look into some figures.
After the meeting, town clerk Helen Dowdall said: ‘Launceston Road recreation ground is adjacent to the allotments so toilets would be welcomed by the allotment holders as well as users of the park. We will put the request to the new council for consideration. The newly-elected councillors will have a tour of Callington at the end of this month and subject to the council being in agreement, we may trial portable toilets, such as those on a trailer, to see how the public receive them.’
Helen said the council would look to do a trial first, due to the recent increase in vandalism and anti-social behaviour around the town.
‘If the trial is well-received and the portable toilets are looked after, we could consider something more permanent. Councillors are mindful that there have been numerous acts of anti-social behaviour in the town. It’s prudent for us to initially take a cautious approach to see if people will look after them.
‘We welcome the idea of toilets but can’t afford to do something permanent straight off and risk them getting damaged. It will be wasted money for tax payers if we build something and have to keep cleaning them up or renovating any damage.’
The idea will be discussed by councillors at a meeting of the Outside Services committee on June 20.
The council is welcoming residents’ opinions on the idea.
