A CHANCE to explore woodland, river valleys, towns and villages on Dartmoor through a series of enjoyable walks is being offered by Dartmoor National Park Authority.

The Moor Care Walks booklet provides excellent alternatives to walking the high moor during wetter and colder periods, as the walks can offer better shelter and provide a more resilient surface than the fragile high moorland areas.

Chrissy Mason, tourism officer for Dartmoor National Park Authority, said the booklet had been produced to help combat erosion of Dartmoor's landscape, particularly during wet and cold winter spells.

She said: 'Moorland areas are particularly susceptible to damage and erosion at this time of year. This booklet of walks suggests a series of alternatives that can be just as spectacular as the high moor.'

Mrs Mason said the walks included a variety of lengths and terrain to suit all abilities.

The majority of walks start in Dartmoor towns and villages such as Yelverton, Princetown and Okehampton enabling walkers to access the public transport system and enjoy local cafes, pubs and shops as part of their day.

Moor Care Walks is available free from the High Moorland Visitor Centre at Princetown, telephone 01822 890414.
